Traditional Order of Wedding Speeches

To understand wedding etiquette, it is important to know the customary order of the wedding speeches. Below is the chronological order of who starts the ball rolling in giving out speeches together with the gist of what they need to say:

First speech is given by the father of the bride

Before everything else, you may want to thank all the guests for sharing in the celebration (friends, family and guests from out of town.)

  • Then, you may want to at least acknowledge the financial contributions to the wedding.

  • Thank the guests for their participation and their gifts. Not only that, thank both set of parents for their contribution to the wedding, for being the best parents and for their undying support over the years.
  • Compliment the beautiful bride and how graceful she is.
  • Thank the best man and a finally a toast to the bridesmaids
  • Last speech is always saved for the best man.

  • Say your remarks for the happy couple. For example, how you saw the groom changed when he met the bride, etc.
  • Always be humorous – people will expect jokes from you.
  • Finally, a toast for the bride and groom.
